Subversion of Wearable Devices: The World's First Flexible Battery Advent Apr 24, 2018

With the advent of technological advances and smart waves, smart wearable devices are also rapidly developing. Its form has also become more and more diversified, from the original smart phones evolved into smart watches, smart bracelets, smart glasses, smart running shoes and so on.

The past year 2017 is a year of rapid development of smart wearable devices. Smart wearable devices have become more and more popular with consumers, and many people are accustomed to the existence of smart wearable devices and cannot be separated. However, in the new year, smart wearable devices want to further develop, but are limited by the speed of development of the battery.

As we all know, whether it is wearable devices or other smart products, the importance of the battery is beyond doubt. Today, wearable device manufacturers are eager to solve some of the challenges of wearable batteries, such as battery life, charging speed, and highly adaptable shapes.

Due to the volume limitation of the wearable device itself, the battery used for the wearable device is also usually irregular. From the principle, the current collector of the wearable device battery is mostly made of high conductivity material and has good tensile properties. Blended with polymers. When the polymer battery is stretched, the connection of the conductive material breaks, which in turn leads to a decrease in the battery conductivity of the wearable device.

At present, in response to this problem, the UNIST (South Korea Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) developed the world's first flexible battery. It is understood that the research team used the "Jabuticaba" structure, which is known as the Brazilian grape, to create this elastic battery using a polymer composite consisting of carbon nanotubes and carbon black.

When the new polymer composite is stretched, the disconnected portion of the carbon black connecting the carbon nanotubes will maintain its original electrical conductivity and can be used to solve the bottleneck problem of current wearable device batteries.

It is worth mentioning that this magical flexible battery is even more secure and dangerous than the current mainstream lithium battery. According to the professor who participated in the development of this flexible battery, “The elastic battery can maintain its original performance while being stretched, and it is safe and reliable. It is hoped that it can be widely used in wearable devices and it will become a solution to current wearable energy storage devices. Core Technology."

There is no doubt that if this technology can be used commercially, it will inevitably subvert the wearable device industry. However, at present, this elastic battery wants to “strengthen its feet” on the wearable device. The first problem to be solved is the same mass production problem as the graphene battery.
